Councilman Peter Vallone Against Water Fluoridation

Councilman Peter Vallone of Astoria has taken up the fight against water fluoridation in New York City’s drinking water.  Adding fluoride to the drinking water, the Councilman says, “[A]mounts to forced medication by the government. What’s next? They decide we’re depressed and add Prozac to our drinking water?”

Critics were quick to point out in December of last year that adding fluoride is supposed to help prevent cavities and thus make taxpayers healthier, at a cost of $7M per year.  One smear piece screams that Vallone “wants your teeth to rot,” while another recommends “fitting the councilman for a tinfoil hat.”
Naturally, the arguments presented by the critics are sensationalized and do not address the valid concerns of Councilman Vallone.  Namely, what right do experts, elected officials or even dentists have to make a citizen ingest fluoride?  Less than a month later, an article in the Daily News recognized a new study questioning the ‘appropriate’ level of fluoride.  The Health Department, the article notes, will “ensure that New Yorkers receive an optimal amount of fluoride through drinking water.”

Clearly, those benevolent watchdogs in the media immediately jump to the question of whether fluoride is safe for consumption at the levels it is currently found in our drinking water.  They ignore the question of whether the government has either the right or the responsibility to add fluoride to drinking water at all.  Councilman Vallone, on the other hand, plans to introduce a bill to eliminate fluoride altogether from drinking water.  We’ll be sure to follow its progress.

  1. Thank you for taking an interest in Fluoridation. New Yorkers need to know that 1) fluoride is neither a nutrient nor required for healthy teeth; 2) the fluoridation chemicals added to NYC’s water supply are lead and arsenic-laced waste products of the phosphate fertilizer industry (hydrofluosilicic acid); 3) Modern science indicates that ingesting fluoride does not not reduce tooth decay but does expose individuals to fluoride’s adverse health effects such as bone, tooth and thyroid damage.

More than 3,600 professionals (including 303 dentists) urge that fluoridation be stopped citing scientific evidence that ingesting fluoride is ineffective at reducing tooth decay and has serious health risks. See statement: http://www.fluoridealert.org/statement.august.2007.html
